Title: Works great and good quality
Review: I have used other brands of dehumidifying rods for decades, and they work great to prevent rusting, mildewing, or any other process in which high humidity degrades an item. It doesn’t actually remove moisture from the air. It is a small heater that raises the temperature of the enclosed space in which it is mounted by just a very few degrees. Even though the absolute level of humidity is unchanged, the warmer air is capable of holding more water and so the relative humidity is reduced, and it is the RH that causes rusting etc. I am currently using dehumidifying rods that I installed decades ago and used non-stop since then, and they are still going strong, and there has been no rusting at all over that long time. All this is just to say that a properly made dehumidifying rod works well and lasts a very long time. This ZARPAX rod does appear to be well made and I expect that it will last for decades (although its warranty is only 2 years). The heater rod appears to be an anodized aluminum tube with some sort of resistance heater inside. It comes with 2 mounting clips which can be secured using either the included screws or double-stick tape pads. The electrical plug is fused and the rod (made in China) has the UL seal. The listing states that this 12 inch rod draws 8 watts while printing on the rod states 38W, which is quite a difference. According to my watt meter, it actually draws 11.4W. The rod becomes noticeably warm withing 1 minute of plugging it in and it appears to achieve full temperature after 5 minutes or so. It gets quite warm to the touch but not hot. A meat thermometer placed between the rod and a folded-up paper towel held onto the rod measures 125°F, but when exposed to circulating air it doesn’t become quite this warm. It certainly doesn’t get hot enough to cause skin burns or start a fire, and the listing states that the rod has thermal protection (but no details are given in the instruction sheet). Be aware that, even though the rod draws only 11.4W, in typical use it will be on continuously and will consume about 0.25 kWh per day or 91 kWh per year. At a typical electricity cost of $0.20/kWh, that’s over $18 per year. That’s a small price to pay to prevent a safe full of guns from rusting or a small closet full of clothes from mildewing, but it’s not not free.

Title: Fixes window condensation issue for me – tho somewhat unique situation.
Review: I have insulated, double pane, lowE, solarium windows, aluminum framed and installed at 45 degrees, that span 20+ feet. I’ve managed to ‘insulate’ them by adding slide in green house polycarbonate panels that slide up and down on the inside. But, overnight, in winter, the glass and aluminum framing ‘weeps’ a lot of condensation, which flows over the ‘window sill’ and has been slowly destroying the drywall beneath. I’ve tried putting rags in there to soak up the moisture, and that helps, but they have to be rung out and dried every non-sunny day. I’ve been meaning to try the reusable dessicant bags, but saw this and had to try it. So far, a single ‘wand’ has successful kept the sill dry enough to prevent any significant moisture build up – and thats on a 20 foot glass panel (3 sections tall) 26 inches wide, with 10 feet of it ‘covered’ by a sliding greenhouse panel at night. The enclosed document suggests that this company makes versions that can be daisy chained together, but I couldn’t find any place to order those, if so. (I have 4 of these panels side by side). Power draw is claimed to be 8 watts (which I have not measured yet), so it suggests that I may be able to eliminate condensation for good with these without a huge power bill. Cold weather (0degF) is forecast for next week, so that will be a great extreme test for them, and identify if I need to be using the longer (24") versions instead. I will update this review after the cold snap and add pictures, if possible. Otherwise, these are exactly as shown – the plastic clips can be used as ‘stand off’ stands or screwed or taped down, so the ‘wand’ doesn’t touch what its sitting on. The wand does get warm to the touch, but not uncomfortably so.

Title: Good for gun safe but not water-tight document safe
Review: I got this thinking it would work in a waterproof, fire-safe for documents. First, I can’t get power in without ruining the seal on the door [they suggest drilling a hole…]. Second, I don’t think the moisture can get out, either. Neither of these issues is the fault to this dehumidifier rod. From what I can see, the rod is well-made and of high quality. It looks like it could keep your gun safe dry. I can confirm that it does heat up when plugged into the wall outlet, so I hope I can find a way to use it meaningfully. I did notice that the printing on the heating rod says that it draws 38W, and not the 8W as reported in the item description. I have been unable to find (either of) my Kill-a-Watt meters to verify. But a closer reading of the instruction sheet that came with the device indicates that the 12” version draws 8W, the 24” draws 25W, and the 36” version draws 38W. I have the 12” version, so the printing on the rod appears to not apply. I do have to admit that I find the metallic, forest green anodized rod to be very good-looking. Green is one of my favorite colors.

Title: Very disappointing, Poor design
Review: I had to drill a large hole in my safe just to plug it in. Or, somehow get a power switch inside my safe, which wasn’t an option for me. Also, the rod isn’t ETL approved. Only the poorly designed plug is UL approved. Don’t waste your money.
